Vegan Recreational Athlete & Dietitian Matt Ruscigno RD to speak at Vegfest Scotland

2015-09-17
| by Editor | Posted in Vlog

Worldwide there is a movement of vegan athletes showing the world that you don't need animal products to excel at sports from bodybuilding to ultrarunning.

Matt Ruscigno MPH, RDrecreational athlete from the USA who co-authored No Meat Athlete and Appetite for Reduction – will speak at Vegfest Scotland on the rise of the Vegan Athlete, how Vegan Athletes are Defying Stereotypes and the tenets of plant-based sports nutrition

Matt Ruscigno has two degrees in nutrition, is professionally credentialed as a Registered Dietitian and is an ethical vegan of nearly 20 years. He is the past-Chair of the Vegetarian Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A recreational athlete himself, Matt has raced the Norseman Ironman in Eidfjord, Norway, completed the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris and is a 3x solo finisher of the Furnace Creek 508, a 500-mile non-stop bike race across Death Valley. He has a private practice in Los Angeles, California.

Matt also co-created a web series of videos, titled ‘Strongest Hearts’, on plant-powered athletes with a professional filmmaker.

Here’s a video interview by Bite Size Vegan with Matt on what he eats as a vegan ultra athlete and registered dietitian:

And here’s a video of the talk “Plant-based and Powerful” that Matt gave at this year’s Mad City Vegan Fest:

Plant-based and Powerful: How Vegan Athletes are Defying Stereotypes

Saturday December 5th in Nutrition/Health talks room (time slot TBC)

Worldwide there is a movement of vegan athletes showing the world you don't need animal products to excel at sports from bodybuilding to ultrarunning. This talk will cover the rise of the vegan athlete and the tenets of plant-based sports nutrition.

Unraveling the Myth that Plant-based Foods are Expensive and Exotic – How to turn nutrition research into practical, healthy everyday meals

Sunday December 6th in Nutrition/Health talks room (time slot TBC)

We are inundated with information on food and nutrition, but which are the most important concerns to be a healthy vegan and to prevent chronic disease? Do you have to eat goji berries and drink green smoothies? Avoid meat alternatives? In this fun talk Matt will discuss what the research says and clarify some myths around healthy eating.

Matt’s appearance at Vegfest Scotland coincides nicely with a cohort of other vegan athletes present at the show, including German-Armenian vegan strongman Patrik Baboumian, vegan cyclist Christine Vardaros, vegan ultramarathoner William Robertson, plus a few others TBC.

Vegfest Scotland is a colosseum of vegan goodness over a whole weekend with sumptuous food treats from 140 stalls and 14 caterers alongside vegan education from a Professionals Vegan Health Summit, a People’s Vegan Activists Summit, cookery demos, living raw food demos, on top of entertainment from comedians, musicians and kids activities, mixed with socialising with like-minded people in the Teen VGN Zone, and the Mature Zone with plenty of seating for an expected crowd of around 10,000 visitors.
